چکیده

One important task of language acquisition involves the ability to distinguish between an inflectional derivation of a word, which is a variant of the word, and a completely new word. This ability is often influenced by a suffixation preference. Previous research has demonstrated that the suffixation preference may not be sub-served by a languagespecific mechanism and that a domain general mechanism may underlie this preference. However, for the domaingeneral mechanism to be a plausible candidate, it has to exhibit flexibility enabling it to account for various types of inflectional morphology existing across languages. This research established that the suffixation preference is both flexible and transferable across domains, which suggests that the suffixation preference is driven by a cognitive mechanism that is both domain-general and flexible in nature.

The Importance of Temporal Information for Inflection-type Effects in Linguistic and Non-linguistic Domains

One of the important tasks of language acquisition is the ability to distinguish between an inflectional derivation from a target word, which is a variant of this word (e.g., tool tools), and a completely new word (e.g., tool stool). In an attempt to explain the ability to solve this problem, it has been proposed that the beginning of the word is its most psychologically salient portion. Howeve...

Image Classification via Sparse Representation and Subspace Alignment

Image representation is a crucial problem in image processing where there exist many low-level representations of image, i.e., SIFT, HOG and so on. But there is a missing link across low-level and high-level semantic representations. In fact, traditional machine learning approaches, e.g., non-negative matrix factorization, sparse representation and principle component analysis are employed to d...

Why *-ling-in? The pertinacity of a wrong gender

Co-occurrence restrictions among affixes are preferably accounted for through GENERAL structural constraints, to do with separations of word-internal domains, with hierarchical rankings of the affixes involved, with processing complexity, or with word-prosodic patterns. Disallowing PARTICULAR designated affixes to combine with one another by (language-particular) stipulation is considered a the...

Accounting for taste: individual differences in preference for harmony.

Although empirical research on aesthetics has had some success in explaining the average preferences of groups of observers, relatively little is known about individual differences in preference, and especially about how such differences might covary across different domains. In this study, we identified a new factor underlying aesthetic response-preference for harmonious stimuli-and examined h...
